Bethany Foster-Eardley

Betty Rose has many incarnations. She is the celestial collection of glowing spheres you encountered on that feverish October night. A manifestation of queer chaos, she lives in co-existence with the entirety of time and space of all continuums. She has walked amongst dryads and deities, pixies and poets, and she often takes her rest in the rabbit hole that lured in a once innocent Alice.

Using my body as a canvas I am trying to further understand the limits and potential of the human form, by building upon my body using makeup, prosthetics , costuming and props to explore and expand the space I allow myself to take up. I also incorporate into my aesthetic features from non-human entities as elves, nymphs, dryads and fauns.

Through short drag performances I am building a narrative and timeline for my character spanning many elements from queer narratives, histories and potentialities, existent and imagined, referencing my own life experience and queering the narratives of familiar pop culture icons.

I archive these performances through clips and photographs, varying in quality from professionally photographed to taken on a blurred phone camera – this variety of display reflects the individuality of each person’s encounter with my character, and the fluidity of human nature which queerness seeks to highlight and value. Queer DIY club spaces are an important element of my practice, as physically and socially accessible safe spaces for queer audiences. This environment allows for shared experiences, in which my art can be an opportunity for collective experience of joy, yearning, anger or catharsis.
