Sonia Yousefi Azimi

The 24 hours news cycle in our society is dominated by stories of war, terrorism, oppression, crime, inequality and natural disasters. News plays a pivotal role in our world, in that it informs us of current affairs whilst also shaping our perceptions of these issues. However, there is a great deal of news that is absent from the mainstream media, meaning there are grave situations and serious matters that are only consumed by a fraction of society. Through art, I have sought to extract an alternate means to inform members of the public – who may otherwise not know about particular global events – about issues afflicting people around the
world. My studio practice focuses on contemporary political, societal and environmental issues, based on a mixture of reports, ranging from unearthing news that has not been fed into our public consciousness, to illustrating news that is (more typically) common knowledge.
