The Overload Project is an experimental practice exploring the creation of interactive audiovisual environments that overload the senses. The concept of ‘overload’ arose from the bombardment of information we are exposed to in our everyday lives and so each interactive environment often originates from a mundanity which is intensified, abstracted and twisted through the layering of sounds, projecting visuals, saturated colour combinations, harsh lighting, tactile surfaces, inclusion of familiar objects and motion/pressure activated elements.
The practice teeters on the balance of the uncomfortable vs comfortable and unfamiliar vs familiar. Although the subject matter varies between projects, a constant remains the creation of these feelings of unease with inclinations of relaxation, as well as the requirement of people as the key to physically activate and complete each project. The Overload Project aims to facilitate collaborative experiences through the relinquishing of a degree of control to others, allowing co-created temporary environments to occur whereby each participant involved has the power to influence everyone’s experience. The balance of chance and control in each project varies and is always dependent on each person.
