My work as an artist aims to portray problems which are daily experienced by people.

All my artworks express emotions with which people can connect. In addition, people can connect emotionally with my drawings by touching and feeling the paintings’ surfaces and appreciate the techniques used. These techniques consequently allow the viewer to imagine the human figure. My work consists of surfaces and textures, which are created through the use of various materials such as stucco, coffee, paper and also personal belongings from people’s lives. My drawings comprise paintings, sculptures and mixed media.

This year, the topic of my artworks is memories. Every human has memories from which they cannot escape, but there are so many in the human brain that not all of them can be accurately remembered and are therefore considered faded. Through my work I want to show how important memories are in life. They can destroy the human body because of how strong they are and people struggle to forget them and let go of the past.

Each person’s life is comprised of numerous memories, created throughout their development, starting from when they were very little and ranging to their adulthood. This suggests that there are many different memories, some of which are happy, some sad, some outlining joyful moments and others moments of anger or loss. As humans we usually choose to hold on to the happy memories, in an effort to let go of the past unpleasant moments in life. However, the saddest memories are often the strongest ones and they are usually hard to forget.

Through my work I strive to show that these memories, however deeply hidden, are never completely forgotten. However, even if forgotten, the memories do not cease to exist in the human brain and simple everyday events, such as an album full of photographs, or a person we have not seen for some time, might bring them back. The event which first created the memory will then be remembered and the feelings associated with it re- experienced in a reduced level.

Through a combination of various materials, colours and textures, I aim to show that memories can be of any form and can withhold any sort of feeling, both negative and positive. Different textures portray different feelings, and each person might represent each one differently, usually according to their own experiences and memories. For example, a painting with intense colours and textures outlines strong feelings with which all other people can connect, by linking that particular feeling with their own memories and experiences.

Each artwork therefore is a representation of a human’s experiences in life. Their memories, as represented by each of my work pieces, are the person’s identity. We become who we are, by learning through our experiences, and adapting our character as a response to dealing with different situations. All the memories we create as we grow up form a part of our existence and combined, define who we are.
